Some reflections
At the start of the month thought that we were doing a reasonably good job of reducing our consumption of plastic. Two weeks in and we have realised there are a lot of additional small changes we can and will make to continue to reduce our impact on the plant. Out goal was not to be a strict 'plastic free' household but to produce less waste and focus on the hierarchy of refusing, reducing, reusing and as a last choice recycling.
Here's some of what we've noticed so far:
- People are actually reading our blog and Facebook posts - thank you!!
- We have less waste in our rubbish bin and our recycling bin (which we will put out next week for the first time in four weeks).
- We've saved money - we've kept a strict grocery list, not been tempted by take away coffee when we've forgotten our reusable cup and have had very few lunches out (although when we have gone out for lunch we've selected restaurants over the food court or fast food which is a little more expensive but much more enjoyable).
- We've learnt a lot, from waste education in Victoria to sustainable alternatives, and there's always more to learn.
- We've not used any of 'The Big Four' single use plastic items - yay us! This is something we aim to sustain long term.
- Replacing items over the coming months as they run out (such as personal care items / cosmetics etc) is definitely going to be a challenge.
