A tropical paradise
So we've been a little quiet the past few days - with good reason we've been enjoying a family holiday in Cairns. We're celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary and have had a wonderful mini break in Far North Queensland.
What we've also discovered is that it's a little harder to stay true to Plastic Free July when in the air and away from home.
Some reflections
Some things have been pretty straight forward: we've carried our drink bottles (so no single use plastic bottles); we travelled with a few cloth bags for groceries; our own fork and spoon (wrapped in a serviette); and we decided on no take out coffee - we're on holidays plenty of time to dine in. We also have a couple of great wet bags left over from cloth nappies which we brought for wet bathers and rashies.
The not so straight forward: food waste and food wrapped in plastic - on the plane, and while out and about. Also being away from home and buying things like dips (that we would normally make from scratch and store in glass) and certain produce like strawberries which of course come in a plastic tray. Last night we had fish and chips on the esplanade - reusable plates, but sauces in disposable cups, and all of the desserts were wrapped in plastic cling film or in single use plastic tubs (for the fruit salad).
So we compromised.
We've had a wonderful time away, and we've decided that each time we travel we will commit to one more change to reduce our plastic consumption!
